One of the major tasks at of 2008 Green Cottages was to clear a large area of brambles and grass to make way for the new polytunnel.
The area we chose had been left to natural pastureland for several years, and provides a good rich fertile soil for our vegetable garden. There is an outside area and a very large polytunnel, both of which will be used in a crop rotation programme to maintain the soil fertility without the need for artificial pesticides or herbicides.
We already have our first crops providing good, home-grown vegetables to our guests at the self catering holiday cottages and meals for our Castell Room to Think conference centre.
Our seeds are sourced from the Real Seed Company based in South Wales, rated 'Ethical Best Buy' by Ethical Consumer Magazine. You'll find no F1 hybrids or genetically modified seed here - just varieties that do really well and taste great when grown by hand. Many are rare heirlooms, and all are open-pollinated (non-hybrid) so we will save our own seed for future planting.

In the spring of 2008 we embarked on the second large garden project ~ to construct and plant a soft fruit cage.
We have planted this area with a variety of locally sourced fruit bushes; raspberry, blackcurrant, gooseberry, tayberry, strawberry, rhubarb and blueberry. These will be the future stock from which we shall be able to provide an organic berry selection for local businesses.
